Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anythingGeorge Bernard Shaw
Our planet is changing and that should be undeniable, but it doesn’t have to mean the end of the world!
We are constantly bombarded with news about how our global temperatures are rising and our oceans and seas are being irreparably harmed. In fact, Forbes recently published an article stating that if our plastic production and pollution does not decrease, then by 2050 there will more plastic in the seas and oceans than fish! When we’re confronted by facts and figures like that it can be easy to want to curl up in a ball and stick our heads in the sand.
Or even worse – we tsk and exclaim about how disgusting it is that no one cares about climate change and the damage we’re doing to our environment and then we keep on scrolling…
No one’s perfect and we’ve all done it at one point, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that we can’t just look to others to sort out this mess for us. Just as we’ve seen with the recent #ClimateStrike where tens of thousands of kids took to the streets to protest the lack of progress our country has made in tackling Climate Change, some would rather comment about the protesters missing a day of school rather than talk about the much more pressing problem at hand.
Having the government place the country into an environmental state of emergency would be great and would certainly highlight the massive challenge we have to tackle. However, that doesn’t look at all likely in the near future. But does that mean that all we should do is complain and then move on with our days of single-use plastic and waste? No! There are things we can be doing in our everyday lives that may seem small, but that will go a long way in tackling the enormous issue that we see before us. It may seem hard, and it may seem like we have to sacrifice the easy way that we’re used living. But there are so many eco-friendly alternative products out there now that will allow us to keep our luxuries and help the environment at the same time. Don’t give up, and don’t lose hope – we still have time to change things.
